Members of the WCG enjoyed a pit and barrel firing December 19th, 2010

A PDF Document with  lots of pictures here.

pit fire 12-2010

Members got together at the home of Steve Aulerich on November 22, 2010 to prepare the pottery. Various techniques were discussed and Dawn Jones shared techniques she has used to get great results. Colors and patterns are obtained by the interaction of fire, heat and colorants. A variety of materials were rubbed, soaked, glued, wrapped, sprinkled, painted and tied to the pieces.   The many participants brought what they had to share (see list below).   The pots were then wrapped in Aluminum foil to act like a sager or newspaper to keep the colorants near the pieces.

On December 19, 2010 the pieces were loaded and fired in a pit and barrel out at Ed Aulerich’s farm south of Corvallis.  It took several hours to load the pit and barrel and fire the ware.  Work started at 10am and ended around 3pm .  The next day the pots were uncovered and results shared.
